Help, I am Stuck In My Garage; what should you do if the power is out, the opener malfunctions or a faulty wall panel could be the cause? Is it time to panic? No.
Try disengaging the electric garage door opener and opening the door manually. Follow these simple steps but requires some attention to safety precautions, to open and close your garage door manually with confidence.
Help, I am Stuck In My Garage
While it stinks to be stuck in your garage, having your cars trapped inside may be even more frustrating. Like your homework excuses as a kid, now you must create a fantastic excuse that you can’t go to work or be late to your boss. Here are simple steps to open your garage door safely.
1. Unplug your automatic garage door opener from the power source when the garage door is closed.
2. Pull the emergency cord, which usually has a red handle and will hang down from the center rail of the garage door mechanism, to disconnect the garage door opener from the door.
3. Lift the garage door straight up until the door is fully open. Make sure the door will remain open on its own.
- If the springs are properly balanced, the door will open easily and stay in place.
- If it’s difficult to open, have a garage door service professional inspect the door to avoid further damage or safety risks.
4. Close the garage door manually and lock it. The garage door isn’t securely shut until you manually slide the lock bar.
Reattach the Garage Door Release Cord
First, check the release handle and ensure it is still on the door track. If not, adjust it accordingly.
Upon close inspection, you’ll notice that when you pull back on the cord, you activate a lever that moves up and down. You must move the cord so the lever attaches to the electric door opener. You should see and hear it click into place.
The final step is to test the door by pushing the opener button. If the garage door opens and closes usually, then you have succeeded.
- If the door doesn’t work, go back and recheck the connection. If it’s not attached, try pulling the cord in the opposite direction and then push the button again.
- Do not exert too much-pulling action on the cord, because you might damage it or the lever. Try the push button again after you relocate the lever to the opposite position. You should also test it with the remote control you keep in your car.
